Today my dad made me take a glucose reading with his strip blood reader thing. I am a very healthy 16 year old male who is, and I dont mean to brag, in tip-top shape. I am 5'9, and weigh 160 pounds approx. and max bench 225. I run track and play football, and my 40 time is a 4.6. Even with those numbers though, I do find that my stamina fails me sometimes while playing sports, and I can feel tired just a little after starting. I never eat junk food, and when I say that I mean rarely ever. I do chew sugar-free, (with small amounts of sugar alcohol) gum almost religiously, and I do drink a lot of water (on some days up to 7 to 8 water bottles.) Anyways, my glucose reading was a very high 151, and now my family is worried about me. I love to eat fruit by the way, every day. Could the fact that I had eaten a bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch twenty minutes before have been a reason? Please help me because these readings almost seem unbelievable...
Answer:
Eating a bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch (yum) will definitely raise your blood sugar whether you are diabetic or not. The guidelines for diabetics to test there blood sugars are when they first get up(fasting), before a meal if they are trying to find out how particular foods affect them, 2 hours after a meal (blood sugar reading should be 170 or under), before bed, sometime during the night and then begin again with fasting blood sugar readings. Fasting sugars should be 90-110 in normal people and in diabetics whose sugars are properly controlled. The other readings are for informational purposes mostly when someone is already a diabetic and are looking to find out how well their diet is working. So, bottom line is unless your fasting blood sugars are consistenly over 110, then you really don't have anything to worry about. If diabetes runs in your family, then it would be wise for you to watch your diet, your weight and keep on an exercise program for prevention. If you begin to show symptoms of diabetes, like weight gain or loss, fatigue, excessive urination, excessive thirst, then a trip to your doctor and a glucose tolerance test would be in order. There is some evidence that if you are pre-diabetic with unstable blood sugars, your doctor can prescribe Metformin and it can help prevent you from developing full blown diabetes if it is given in the early stages. Hope this helps.

Try the test first thing in the morning before you had anything to eat or drink if it is still high get a GTT done from your doctor. You are at higher risk because you have a parent with it. If both have it you're doomed it 's a gene that will happen or you'll be a carrier.
That reading does not count. You need a fasting test. meaning, do not eat or drink for 8 hours prior to test, then take a reading. If above 100, call your doctor.
I am type II diabetic and have learned a lot about it. Normal fasting blood sugar is between 80 and 120. After eating, the blood sugar of a normal person will go up, possibly as high as 200. About two hours later, blood sugar should return to normal levels. The fact that you tested at 151 shortly after eating is normal. You should either test your blood sugar first thing in the morning or wait until two hours after eating.
Your blood sugar will rise after eating carbs and sugar. I dare say that if it had been checked after 2 hours you would have found it in normal ranges. You need to do a fasting (nothing to eat or drink for 12 or more hours) blood sugar and if it is still high, then get worried and see a physician. I am a diabetic and my specialist told me to check 2 hours after eating to make sure that my insulin was working and keeping my bs down. You sound normal to me, and by no means, am I a physician but being a diabetic for several years makes me think you are okay.
As a type 2 diabetic I can tell you, YES, eating the cereal raised your sugar, and it is absolutely normal. If you are still concerned, take the test for a week first thing in the morning, before eating anything. If it comes out between 80 and 120 (fasting sugar range), you can say you are OK. Just to be 100% safe, you can always talk to your doctor.
i don't think 151 is very high, but the cinnamon toast crunch wouldn't help anyway. whenever I have that cereal(im a 16 yr old diabetic) my blood sugar goes way up. Test it again another time like an hr or two after u eat.
